Cummer Museum

In the heart of Jacksonville is a hidden gem that has been designated as one of the most important cultural institutions in the Southeast. The Cummer Museum is an art museum and garden designed to be enjoyed by visitors from around the world.

A short history of the museum

Founded in 1949, it was originally known as “The Garden Club of Jacksonville” and operated on a small plot on Riverside Avenue. In 1958, the museum moved to its current location on Riverside Avenue and was renamed in honor of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Cummer, who had made a generous donation to the club.

In 1988, this institution moved into its current building designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes and now operates with a staff of 25 full-time employees, 10 part-time employees, and over 100 volunteers who help maintain gardens throughout 160 acres of land.

The Cummer Museum has since become the first and only true Garden Arts Museum in the United States- showcasing both American and European art from 1750 to the present. The museum’s collection contains over 5000 objects, including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and decorative arts.

Cummer Museum has also featured in numerous films and television shows, including “The Vampire Diaries”. It was used as Mystic Falls High School on the show where Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) works with Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham).
